Cara Laine from Spark Joy Box is all about spreading love and joy, and she’s one of the kindest people I’ve met. Cara started her subscription self-care box business during the pandemic as her custom wedding invitation business came to a standstill. First things first – what is your walk-on-stage music?

Natalie Merchant “Kind and Generous” (Editor’s note – Cara thought she should have something more upbeat, but honestly, this is the perfect song for Cara. And I loved that I found myself remembering every word to this song. It’s perfect.)

When did you start your business, and why did you create it?

I started it last year in the middle of a lockdown. My friend and I had thrown the idea around of a subscription box about a year before covid. She is pretty insightful so I always write down her off-handed comments. When my other business was on hold due to covid, this business idea would NOT get out of my head. I kept trying to dismiss it – as how was I going to start a new business in the middle of a global pandemic when I didn’t have any money coming in – that would be crazy! Well I finally gave in, focused on it, and got excited! I told others and they got excited! It was then I KNEW I HAD to do it. I didn’t know how, but I knew I had to so I just kept taking it a step at a time. It is created from something I have had in me since I was a little girl: I have always wanted to spread light, and love and joy to all I meet. This is at the core of The Spark Joy Box. Spread Love. Spark Joy. is my tagline.

Tell us about your business and what makes you unique in your field.

My subscription box company is a bit different from most. It is packaged in a luxury box that has a ribbon and magnetic enclosure. A part of the proceeds of every box goes back to support a local bay area non-profit and there is a pre-stamped pay-it-forward card and plantable seeded hearts in every box.

Who is your audience and what makes them special?

My target audience: ALL women! We women give so much of ourselves to our families, careers, businesses but we need to remember to give to ourselves as well! If we do not get self-care, we cannot give to others as we cannot pour from an empty cup. My hope is for busy women to subscribe so they can get a box of self care – delivered in a luxury box – every 3 months!

Interestingly, my target audience is really different that what I initially anticipated. The majority of my orders has been from women ordering to help lift up other women with self-care items. So it is not only self-care, but also caring for others. A lot of women (and men) have purchased to comfort women who are battling cancer, going through a mastectomy, rough time, celebratory times, etc.

If you could magically give all of your community members one thing in this world, what would it be, and why?

The knowledge and the know-how about self-care. It is absolutely essential to every one of us!

Did you create your own website or hire it out? Do you use WordPress?

I hired a fabulous web person who helped me with both of my websites. We used Squarespace for both.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about starting their own business?

NEVER ignore those thoughts that will not go away – it is a sign that you need to listen and follow your heart! Also, never give up on yourself or your dream!

If you could go back in time and do something differently, what would you do and why?

I feel that all things happen in divine timing – so just keep looking forward.

Do you have an email list? If so, did you start it when you launched?

Yes I do. I started it by using the email list for my other business I have had for many years.

Is this your only job? Did you launch your business while working another job?

I have 2 businesses and I work a part time job. However, at the time I started this my other business was not making any money due to covid and my 20 hour a week part time job went down to 1-3 hours. To top it off, unemployment was stuck for me and it took Channel 7 Michael Finney to help me get it unstuck in October 2020.

How do you promote your site?

Networking. Word of mouth. Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, soon to be Pinterest and Etsy and Alignable.

Who are your favorite bloggers or podcasts right now? Or what is an influential book that you’ve read lately?

I have read: The Surrender Experiment by Michael Singer and The Five Second Rule by Mel Robbins – highly recommend them both.
